Murals on the Azores

Ponta Delgada is one of the main cities on the Azores, the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic west of continental Europe. Though we usually post Tucson murals on this blog, I thought you'd enjoy seeing some of the lively mural scene on the streets around the port.

Most of these murals are dated 2011 or 2012, so I think the government might have had a hand in them as they sprouted so quickly. (If you'd like to know the exact locations, please ask. The original photos were all geotagged, but these online versions aren't.) I snapped these on November 1. (Tomorrow, it's back to our regularly scheduled murals.)

Frank's Auto Refinishing

The city of South Tucson has murals everywhere — including the auto body shop at 2120 S. 4th Avenue:

Although the north side wall is partly hidden from the street, it has a mural too:

The north-side mural is signed Todd Blum. I took the photos on September 16th.

Update (December 11, 2014): There's some new art here.

Vaketones Car Wash

This tile mural is on the wall of Vaketones car wash in South Tucson. I didn't see an address when I was there on September 16th, but it's the next building north of 2225 S. 4th Avenue.

Caution! Critter!

When I saw this triangular mural at 2432 S. 4th in South Tucson on September 16th, I thought of the warning signs used in the UK and Europe. They're triangle-shaped with an image of whatever you’re being warned about.

I found this photo on fotopedia.com

Cross Roads restaurant

This is the west end of the south side of Cross Roads restaurant, 2602 South 4th Avenue:

I was there on September 16th.

Update (September 1, 2017): The restaurant has (by now,at least) two “selfie boards” (what did we call self-portraits before “selfies”?). There are photos in today's entry Crossroads Selfie (maybe a mural part 78).

Surrounded by murals: our 700th post

A sort of mural museum wraps a parking lot for Plush on 4th Avenue. The parking lot is half a block south of 6th Street, between Herbert and 5th Avenues. Here are photos of all the murals, starting from the southeast corner and moving clockwise to the northeast corner:

Howard Rains took the photo of the trolley mural; we showed it here on May 25, 2011. I took the other photos on March 27 and April 16, 2012.

Flags and dancers in South Tucson

In South Tucson, on 4th Avenue just south of 36th Street, along the west side of the parking lot for Tucson Greyhound Park, is this mural:

It's in the same style as two murals along the north side of the parking lot. I snapped this photo on September 16 (after a rainy monsoon season, as you can see by all of the plants around the mural..).

The mural is signed at the lower right By: Temo / Martin Anthony / Sarah Gabrielle.

London's largest mural

I'm away from Tucson for a couple of weeks, so I'll slow the mural posts down to one every other day until I'm home on November 11th. Here's a mural on the southwest corner of Euston Road and Pancras Road, across from Kings Cross station, here in London. The website CreativeReview.co.uk calls it London's largest mural:

Ochoa Elementary, east wall

Along the east wall of Ochoa Elementary School, running north from the corner of 7th Avenue & 26th Street, is a mural of the planets:

On the left side, the mural starts with Pluto, the former planet that was (in)famously demoted to a non-planet a few years ago. (As always, you can click on the photo for a larger view.)

I took the photo on September 11 from half a block east — at the John Valenzuela Youth Center. You can also see:

Ochoa Elementary's long mural, close-up

We showed the west wall of Ochoa Elementary, 101 W 25th St, on May 18, 2010. Back then, when I rolled by, the school grounds were closed — so I only got a long shot with a zoom lens.

On September 11, 2012, I rode by, the campus had just opened for the school day. I walked along the west wall, snapping photos from north to south, as students started to arrive.
