Hidden on Contzen

This neighborhood, Barrio Anita, has several big mural installations in and around it: the east side of I-10, Anita Street Market, Oury Park, and Davis Bilingual School. To see them, you can use our mural map at map.tucsonmurals.org; try searching for Contzen. (I'll include a screenshot at the end of this post.) There's also a pocket park along Contzen Avenue, in front of the I-10 mural; details are in today's post Two tables next to giant murals on the Tucson's Pocket Parks blog.

There are several murals in front of homes. Here's one on the fence in front of a home along Contzen:
The artist's signature is in the middle of the left edge:
Below is a Google Map that has the mural marked with an X and a square at the pocket park a few blocks north on Contzen.
I took the photos on July 11, 2024.

The other side of Anita Street Market

This neighborhood market is known for tortillas and food — especially its burros. Their Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/AnitasStMarket/. (Both the phone number and website currently listed on that page don't work. They ask you to send a Facebook message to order tortillas ahead of time.) The sign on the front of the store says Anita St. Market, but Facebook has Anita’s Street Market… whatever.

They've had some financial troubles, so there's a chance you'll find it closed. This June 24, 2024 #ThisIsTucson article has that story and a lot of history: Tucson survivors: Anita's Street Market is known for their beloved burritos and decades-long history.

It's had murals on the north side since at least 2009. This is on July 8, 2024:
There are closeup photos from 2019 here: Murals being (re-)made, part 52: Anita Market.

On the south side is a shaded seating area with murals on two walls:
I zoomed in on the west wall:
It was painted in 2021:
Next, the south wall:
Julian came back to paint it in 2024:
A Google Maps Street View from January 2023 shows a different mural on the south wall:

I took all the photos on July 8, 2024.

Tony Montana on 6th

Just by coincidence, Tony Montana (click there for info from Wikipedia) has the same initials as the owner, Tony Montoya, of Tony's Car Wash & Triple J Title Services on South 6th Avenue:
And the initials in the mural are for… you guessed it:
The artist was Julian Argote:
I shot by on November 18, 2020.

"Sugar Hill"

Mural by Tucson Arts Brigade. Sponsored by the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.  The Sugar Hill neighborhood was one of the few places in Tucson where a black professional could buy a home between WWII and the passage of civil-rights legislation in the '60s.  Eventually, Sugar Hill was absorbed by the Northwest and El Cortez Heights neighborhoods.  A movement has begun to restore the name to the original neighborhood.  However, there is a debate whether the name honors the area or denigrates it.

I took these photos on 12/11/2018. Captions list artists' names from left to right.

The mural is viewed from N. 6th Ave.
Left Side: Teresa Diane Altamirano, Annalisa Loevenguth, David Tineo, Slov (Sabrina Vincent), Tanya Alvarez
Where's a chainsaw when you need it?
Right Side: Delbert Antone, Xaivier Ringer, Jessa Hudgens, Julian Argote, Caressa Wittwer

Update from Jerry Peek (January 29, 2024): I've read (on the Facebook group Tucson Murals and Street Art) that Michael B. Schwartz led this project.
