Murals being (re-)made, part 51: Fantasy Comics

Somehow we (I hope! :) haven't posted the murals at Fantasy Comics. In July of last year, I decided to fix that. I took photos… then forgot to post them.

It turned out to be a good mistake. Since then, I saw a blog with a photo of a Batman mural hidden behind a wall next to the entrance. When I went back to photograph it in May of this year, an artist was in the parking lot touching up the murals. It turned out to be Danny Martin; he's done a lot of other murals around town, too. He told me that he hadn't painted the Batman mural but that he'd done the rest.

The murals did look a bit worn last year. Let's look at those photos, then the same murals being touched up — and the Batman mural.

Artistic gift to neighbors and passersby

A block west of the Downtown Clifton Hotel mural, owners of a home have commissioned three murals on the home's side facing the alley. (That's Rubio Alley, which Google Maps calls Rubio Avenue.) Kristin has written us twice: once with the first two photos below, then with the third photo.

Here's what she wrote in the two messages:
We had these murals painted on the side of our house facing Rubio alley in Barrio Viejo.

The image of the virgin was painted by our very good long time friend Raechel Running. She is a photographer, writer, illustrator, and visual artist who hails from Flagstaff and now resides in Barrio Viejo in Tucson just around the corner from us! Her works include covering the greater southwest and the US/Mexico borderlands.

The second mural is a portrait of Artist and poet Jim Harrison that we commissioned just after his death in April 2016. It was created by a great long time friend from Flagstaff, Jaybyrd Willison. Jaybyrd has a colorful history (literally) painting portraits in oil, being an outlaw biker and no gooder-turned-philosophical-hermit and writer.

We have added to our collection as well since I emailed you last. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. We continue to commission new work and will hopefully have another in progress soon. I have attached one of the murals with the artist Danny Martin standing next to it.

Google Street View shows more art on the front of their home (facing Kennedy). Fabulous!

Thanks very much, Kristin. I'm looking forward to stopping by and seeing the next mural.

Update (October 15, 2017): There are four more murals to see: More of Kristin's gift.

TUCSON

Let's start 2015 with a mural in a prominent spot: the corner of Speedway & Stone, across from Pima Community College. It was painted around a year ago or so, replacing a Dia de los Muertos mural.
All except the first and last photos are Mark Fleming's taken (according to the timestamp in the photo files) on February 16, 2014. I took the first photo and the last on September 28, 2014 (not long after Mark sent his photos... thanks, Mark!).

The figure on that last mural seems to be peeling off. It looks like a paste-up. (As always, you can click on a photo for a larger view.)

The artists' names and website links (except Rock Martinez’s) came from a Tucson Sculpture Festival 2014 page.

Have an art-ful 2015! We'll help.

Update (February 15, 2022): The mural is cracked and faded. It's also hidden behind a restaurant. There are photos in today's post TUCSON is fading….
